FICS gone?

I've been trying to get back onto FICS, after not logging in for a year or more, and it seems to be dead. There is a website, and even a new nice looking web interface, but clicking on connect from the web interface doesn't do anything. Also tried to telnet to it(port 5000) and that gets rejected. So is there still some way to connect that I am missing, or is it entirely dead now and just waiting for the servers to drop offline?

The server is up for me. I used the ancient Winboard 4.2.7 to log in using port 5000. Maybe it was a temporary glitch.

The following command worked for me.

I can't imagine why I would be ip banned, but that seems like the most plausible explanation at this point.

Have you tested from a cell phone or tablet? There are apps for FICS.

Simple ping commands retrieve the same IP 54.39.129.129 from the following three URLs:

• fics.freechess.org

• freechess.org

• www.freechess.org
