surge of games of titled players vs. Leela Odds bots

Post by lkaufman »

In the last couple days there has been a massive surge in the number of games played by GMs, IMs, and other very high rated players on LIchess against the LeelaKnightOdds bot and to a lesser extent the new LeelaRookOdds bot. Over 40 games by GM Andrey Stukopin, over 30 by GM Kamil Dragun, many more by GMs and IMs (one rated 3079 bullet and 2929 blitz!) and some by an FM with a 3155 bullet rating! Most of these games have been 1' + 1", though some were 3'2". I'm not sure what set off the flurry, but most of the players seem to be from Poland, so it's not random. The score in the last couple days in 1'1" knight odds games vs players rated over 2600 in blitz or bullet was 137 wins, 8 losses, and 10 draws for a performance over 3100, but even this may be misleading since the performance just against the two players rated over 3000 bullet (3079 and 3155) was 13.5 out of 14! At 3'2" blitz or equivalent time controls, it was 23 wins, one loss, and 2 draws against strong players averaging 2544 blitz, for a 2974 performance, near the top of the scale. So based on this, even Magnus and Hikaru would lose at 1'+1", but might be somewhat favored at 3'2". Maybe 3'1" would be about fair for them.

At rook odds no GMs have played yet (except for me; I score about 1 out of 3 at 5'3" but my play is only around FM level now), but a strong IM came out slightly ahead at 3'5" after losing very badly at 1'5". Another player with a blitz rating of 2532 lost overwhelmingly at 3'2". So even with rook odds, it probably takes a Lichess blitz rating in the mid 2600s to break even at 3'2", roughly a "par" GM.
