Engine endgame position

Post by Look »

I was watching some previous engine games, and I came to this position:

[d]8/6p1/1b5p/1P1k1P2/5P2/2R4P/r2NK3/8 b - - 0 46

Black played ... Rb2 and went on to lose. Can ... h5 save the game ?
Farewell.

Guess yes, but Black can still fail easily, as one of three games I did let play out shows. After some Forward- Backward with SF dev., 30 threads of 16x3.5GHz and 32 G hash after 46...h5:

SF with 40'+5" played out drawn on its own too as well as Lc0 with White did against SF (28threads) with 3070ti GPU and net 6147500 at 25'+5".

Yet Lc0 lost with Black in game of reversed colours, 47...Ba5? instead of ...Ra7 might have been already crucial, regards

This position seems like a shallow river. Without knowing deepness at parts, I would be drowned crossing it.

Position after 46...h5 47.Rg3 can be taken as single best move test position with 47...Ra7! only holding the draw for Black, in that way it could be called a game changer too.
After some Forward- Backward from and to it (already played 47...Ra7!):

[d]8/r5p1/1b6/1P1k1P1p/5P2/6RP/3NK3/8 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Stockfish dev-20240612-025da6a0:

Depth: 50/94 00:05:02 2543MN, tb=13635053
White is slightly better.
+/= (0.46)

And after next best (least bad) 47...Ba5? instead:

[d]8/6p1/8/bP1k1P1p/5P2/6RP/r2NK3/8 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Stockfish dev-20240612-025da6a0:

48.Rd3+ Kc5 49.Ke3 Kxb5 50.Nf3 Bb4 51.Kd4 Be7 52.Kd5 Bf6 53.Ng5 Kb6 54.Ne4 Ba1 55.Rd1 h4 56.Nd6 Ra5+ 57.Ke6 Ra6 58.Rc1 Bb2 59.Rc4 Ba1 60.Kf7 Ka5 61.Ne8 Kb6 62.f6 gxf6 63.f5 Ra3 64.Rxh4 Kc5 65.Rh8 Kd4 66.Ng7 Ke5 67.h4 Ra4 68.Re8+ Kf4 69.Kg6 Kf3 70.h5 Rg4+ 71.Kh7 Rh4 72.Ra8 Be5 73.Kg6 Rg4+ 74.Kf7
Depth: 40/81 00:02:56 1661MN, tb=3642260
White has a decisive advantage.
+- (2.72)

At position with Black to move at 47th, Lc0 with 3070ti and net 6147500 takes some time to keep Ra7 up stable in output, Torch failed to do so even after some Forward- Backward at my trials with online- installation of yesterday's and a few minutes (depth 45) with option 40Mb of free account (not being allowed to store output). After going into the lines after ...Ba5 and Ra7, time to depth after returning to root position gets longer, but up to depth 39 (again some minutes of pondering) engine yet sticks with wrong move (47...Ba5?) still, regards
Peter.

I noticed that most of the other engines liked a similar line at some point in the calculation.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

46..h5 47.Rd3+? (instead of the much better Rg3) gives away White's advantage too easily. After some Forward Backward from and to it (after your Huntsman- output 47.Rd3+? played):

Position aftger 47.Rg3 isn't very difficult to be solved with enough hardware- time, but to see a clear winning eval with second best move 47...Ba5? (am) and a clearly drawing one for 47...Ra7+! isnt' as trivial as simply keeping the correct bm in output.
Again SF dev. after Forward- Backward and 47....Ra7+!:

And for some engines I tried, even this is sometimes a matter of waiting long enough for a second time ...Ba5? yet to return again for some more ponder- time, especially with multipv=2, this time (with still from Forward- Backward full hash) at most discriminating test position before 47...:

Time to solution changes here from run to run and from compile to compile of course, even not so much as for my few trials with the compile above and with v0.32.0-dag+git.4cfe7426. Net was always 6147500.

And as told in posting above too, Torch wasn't to be got to favour 47.Ra7 at all, not even with some Forward- Backward at my trials way back then (not with empty hash started to depth 45 and not after Forward- Backward of both relevant lines till dept 39), but of course I know the installation to be used in browser ("Torch 40Mb download") isn't the strongest one.

Till staying stable (after returning to 47...Ba5? again after having had the right one above already for 46") at bm it yet takes 1'24" too , therefore I wrote, better wait a little longer, if bm for some single engine- runs appears early, whether or not it stays up too, regards
Peter.
