Unfortunately, I need to disagreeow with you.
No matter the approach you take at playing chess, you inevitably and inherently commit to at least one of the three poisons.
If you play seriously with all your strength, applying your wits to understand the game; then you are eager, you are hungry for knowledge, you are consumed by the poison of greed.
Are you challenging someone to a game of chess to show them you are better? Are you afraid of losing against your opponent? Do you care if you lose? Do you throw your mouse into your screen after losing the 5th game in a row? Chess is a source of anger and a channel for your resentments. You fall into the unwholesome root of hatred.
Yet is there no way of enjoying chess in the spirit of all Buddhas? After all, playing a casual game of chess with friends, is that not a gentle and modest way to pass time? That might be. But do not forget the venom of ignorance. You're thinking about chess? Then you better think properly! Superficial knowledge on peak Dunning-Kruger is a sin worse than not knowing nothing whatsoever. After all, you can't possibly know everything. But for the things you make space for in your mind, you have to make good use of them. Once you start searching, you can't leave a node less traveled.

What about using chess as a way to understand knowledge and intelligence?

The third poison was "delusion", so practice yourself in humility while playing? Matthew 5:3?j.t. wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2024 2:22 am [...]

Thank you for spotting that, Srdja.
Dunning-Kruger is back in fashion - but it's wrong. Go positive - go with "The Winner Effect" (link)!
Here's how people often become good at something:
* they have a go
* they do it better than the people they see around them
* they become confident, they do more of it, and the Winner Effect kicks in
* soon they genuinely are good
