Colossus 2025a now available

Post by MartinBryant »

I have just released an updated version of my Colossus engine on my website at http://www.colossusgames.somee.com

There are a couple of bug fixes (in particular lazy-SMP now works properly again) and tweaks from the previous version 2024b.
My tests indicate an improvement of about 15-20 ELO.

No it does not. The UCI protocol does not support resigning, so it was not the engine that decided to terminate the game. A more accurate statement would be:

Colossus reports a large negative evaluation in a drawn position, which some engine testers have decided should be interpreted as the engine should lose the game, even if the game would have been drawn under standard chess rules.

The game was played under Arena and resign threshold was set to -900 cp. I chose that value although some authors had suggested that even -500 was more than enough in most cases. For weaker engines I set that threshold to -1300. Maybe I should not use adjudication at all.

Anyway, the engine computed value in the game is well above -900. Also, if Arena adjudicates a game it displays 'Arena adjudication' not 'XY resigns'. So I don't know what to think and it is conceivable that Colossus did something wrong.

As Peter states, the UCI protocol simply does not have a command that the engine can send to the UI to declare "I resign", so it certainly seems to be a UI issue.
Colossus' output is certainly what I would expect. Once it reaches a position within the endgame tablebases it simply filters its root movelist to include only those moves which maintain the known result (in this case a draw). And you can see that it makes a number of 'only' moves before the game is terminated.
I rarely use Arena so cannot speak to its output or integrity.
However, I know from watching Graham Banks' broadcasts that he has his UI set to declare a draw immediately if the game reaches a drawn 5-man tablebase position.

Anyway, this issue may have occurred unnoticed multiple times so I think it is prudent for me to modify Colossus' evaluation output such that when it knows it is in a drawn tablebase position it uses a narrower range, perhaps simply dividing the score by 8.
