Hello,
I have an iMac with i5 CPU and macOS 10.13.6. Neither Hiarcs nor Shredder accept Stockfish 16.1, 17 or 17.1 as an UCI engine. No problems with version 16 titled "x86-64-modern" though. Any ideas why?
Kind regards,
macOS problem with Stockfish 16.1 and later?

Is the OS version you are using too old perhaps? I'm guessing here. Not sure how much past 10.x you can update to, but I feel there must be some versions between 10.x and 15.5 that you can update to.
Just a guess/thought.

Probably too old but it is the latest version that I can update to. Strength of SF 16 is already way too much for me but just wanted to know why 16.1 does not work. Thank you for your time.

The best thing to do is to buy the new M5 MAX / Ultra in the next 1-3 months.

Which version did you try?
You probably need to download the `sse41-popcnt` (formerly `modern`) compile.
AVX2 (with or without BMI2) or even AVX512 won't work on your computer.

I started downloading in the order of BMI2, AVX2, POPCNT and 64-bit for SF 17.1. None of the four worked. Same for SF 17 and SF 16.1 for a total of 12 tries.Joerg Oster wrote: ↑Thu Jul 31, 2025 10:33 am

BMI2 and AVX2 of SF 16 also did not work. Only POPCNT version (15th try

So yes, you are right AVX2 does not work. Maybe I am expecting for too much for a 14 year old computer

Still very happy with SF 16. Amazing project and people.
Thank you,

Just curious, what are the specs for your CPU in your Mac and how many nps does Stockfish 16 get in the starting position?
Thanks!
Thanks!

The CPU is Intel Core i5-2400s (Sandy Bridge) @ 2.50 GHz https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... tions.html
SF 16 reaches 499K nps at 2 minutes.

Thanks for the info! I guess that you are using all 4 cores for that nps test?kaissa wrote: ↑Thu Jul 31, 2025 7:48 pmThe CPU is Intel Core i5-2400s (Sandy Bridge) @ 2.50 GHz https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... tions.html

Re: macOS problem with Stockfish 16.1 and later?
It increased to 1.384K nps when I chose 4 threads. I use Shredder interface. The thread can be increased to 1.024 which I find very odd. I tried that and had to reboot when the system became unresponsive. The Intel site says this CPU has 4 threads so I guess 1.384K is the max. Thank you for reminding the number of cores.royb wrote: ↑Thu Jul 31, 2025 10:50 pmThanks for the info!
