In Windows 10 you can still use a modified HOSTS file although Microsoft has recently made it harder to change to DNS Client Server, the only setting that you have to change. But it still seems possible to use it. See https://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm It's free but he does need to pay hospital bills.
Occasionally some of the ads may slip through but I only saw some on Ed's site once I believe.

No ads , honestly.
The web host here reminds me of Trump: "We are going to build a wall here to keep out all the aliens and they are going to pay for it" "People from Holland? what are they doing here?" "They must be hackers." We: "No you see, Mr. Trump, that is HGM, Hand of God Man, he is one of the moderators." "Basically, he is running the show here." Trump: "A moderator, aha, like in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, I know all about that. I used to run a show myself." We:"No you see, it a bit different, he is for law and order and we are having election". "An election, ha, now I have proof that you are hackers, you are the guys who stole my election!"

Most of the time I am still blocked from TalkChess; only rarely I get through. I am currently in e-mail contact with Quentin Turner, discussing the possibility to migrate to a dedicated server.

TalkChess is dying, we should move sooner than later. Thank you ChessUSA for all the good years. If we really want to thank them for the good years, we should offer them a free ChessUSA link to whereever we go.

I don't think running an adblocker should be a requirement for visiting talkchess.MikeB wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:43 pmInstall the adblock extension for chrome, no ads.Damir wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 3:03 pmJust Install AdGuard AdBlocker and uBlock Origin as extension and you won't get any ads. Generally I don't have big issues with ads, as long as they are not obnoxious, like on Ed's forum.

The problem is an IT administrative one, i.e. not within the scope of moderator activities. I'd also suggest to not make the possible relocation of Talkchess a moderation election topic, but to have that in an entirely different discussion.

I agree in a sense that we as members should be patient and wait for more information on the current situation. Is talkchess.com under DOS attack? IP blocking? Frequent logouts? Negotiation with the sponsor for an own server?

Ad supported services tend to disappear after a few years, especially when visitors block the ads.Michel wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 7:13 pmI don't think running an adblocker should be a requirement for visiting talkchess.MikeB wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 6:43 pm

You can’t look at this as merely an individual but as a community that exists over years and decades.

Re: Time to say thanks to ChessUSA for all the good years and move
My point was that moderator is more of a social position, i.e. dealing with people. If we mix that with administrative aspects, in particular server migration, this would have the side effect of requiring such skills for a moderator position. That in turn would shut out TC members without IT admin background from a moderator post, and I don't think this is an intended effect.
If, on the other hand, we keep the TC server migration separate from the moderator election, then we can concentrate more on the "how" aspects, come to a conclusion, and then see who is willing and skilled to do such a migration without abandoning the database. Remember that the last forum update was pretty difficult, to the point where we donated to get money for paying a contractor to do this job - so a full-blown migration won't be easy-peasy.

This is literally the only thing that interests me about these elections. And any member of the the current team gets no vote for not reacting to this problem strongly enough.I suggest that all moderator candidates add a statement on their policy how they intend to deal with the IP blocking issue.
