We used every anti-virus program we could find, including Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare. Took a clean install to return things to normal.
That's why I love my linux boxes. Never happens.
My son is a windows IT "expert". Very good at getting most virus programs out. But even he gets beaten sometimes and admits defeat. They multiply and get into everthing! Watch out for music files. Very nasty. And if you have kids and they use your computer watch out.
But linux is not totally ammune to viruses. There are very sharp nasty people out there who can screw it up. But linux is just not as popular as windows (to bad) and as a result most viruses are intended for windows.
My son loaded AVG and Spybot on my windows system. Both free. Both set to run in the middle of the nite and I am amazed at what these 2 programs find and destroy. And both will run virus updates and so they are always up to date. Very nice! I have had no problems for more then a year now and no problems. If you are tring to run a program which AVG does not trust AVG will ask you if you want to continue and if you are sure that the download is safe then go for it. But it will ask! I never had a problem with it so far.

I've also used these two freeware programs and not had any problems.

If you are not downloading the programs from the internet but from a zipped file on another computer then I would suggest the following: Turn off you anti-virus programs, I don't mean delete them, this is just a temporary item. After that then try to unzip the file, if I am correct that should allow you to run the chess program, just don't forget to reactivate you anti-virus programs before getting on the net again.

Just got online for first time this eveing and saw all of your replies to my call for help. I thank each and every one of you for taking the time to answer me- Fonzy, Bob Hyatt, Ron , Graham, Bill , Alex and Jim. Hope i didnt leave anyone out. It was awfully nice of each of you. I think the easiest thing to do is let Jim just send me a version that Norton wont have a problem with- but you guys really gave me a good feeling inside when i saw the responses. That's the true meaning of good will on the forum.
