Q8200 is new but no big overclockign potential (400x7 = 2.8Ghz)
because FSB = 333 and multiplier is only 7.

my PC:
Q6600@3Ghz with Zalman Cooler running rock stable for more than 1 year now
I read a lot of reviews that Q6600 is much better compared to Q8200 regarding overclocking potential. I'm not yet sure if I'm going to overclock the CPU but in case I do I will just limit it to 3Ghz.

At stock speed the review says that Q6600 is still a little bit faster because of the higher Ghz and the higher cache.

The only drawback of the Q6600 based on what I read compared to the Q8200 is power consumption.

Well, I have nearly an year old Q6600, It's actually moderately best priced and best buy now since even upgraded ones from Q9x series are available on the market. If you are really interested in something else, perhaps you might be willing to buy the Q9x extreme series, I've heard they fare better.
Agree, still Q6600 delivers a lot/most for the moment. But as usual, it all depends on the use, the goal. Surely, if the aim is online competition, overprice for hardware is common for those who don't invest time in making books.
For personal test-use, much hardware will do, as long as conditions are identical...
My primary intent in buying a quad is for development purposes only. Besides my budget is limited so I will just pass on the high end QX9 series and will just replace the PC later this year with the new Core i7 technology.

Do you think an Octa for Core i7 will be possible this year or you will just have to buy two processors and just put it in a two socket motherboard?

That's exactly right Edsel!

Present Philippine pricelist is here just for comparison (I'm sure you have the latest too):

Q6600 2.4ghz 8mb 1066 fsb ~9150 pesos
Q8200 2.33ghz (4mb) 1333fsb ~9650-9700 pesos
Q9400 (2.66G) 6mb 1333fsb ~13400 pesos
Q9550 (2.83G) 6mb 1333fsb ~16500 pesos
Intel Core i7-920 (2.66G) 8mb S1366 ~14950 pesos
Phenom X4 9550 2.2ghz ~7100-7350 pesos
Phenom X4 9950 2.6ghz ~9450 pesos

And prices are still dropping!

I'm also planning to buy a new one but have no available space in my room yet:D! And you know how easy to get a new pc here - like cellphones  !

It´s easy... the same intel price is more for Q6600, 169 €, and Q8200 149 €.

The overclocking is better for Q6600 because have a more big multip.

Not other MB permit ups a lot of, after 333 Bus... in case Q8200.

OK. OC don´t is interesting for normal user... but.. the speed normal is:

2.4 Ghz. for Q6600
2.333 Ghz for Q8200...

Software chess it´s more sensible to speed, that to "cache"... errr ¡ but Q8200 have a more small cache ¡: 2x 2048 kByte , tha Q6600 have 2x 4096 kByte... ok bus is in Q8200 1333 MHz, but you can give this for Q6600, only buy a good memory, and good MB... these others components not permit do better in a more cheap Q8200

It´s more practical Intel® Core 2 Quad Q9550, because have a lot of more of cache, and speed bus, and the more important, speed ¡ 2,8 Ghz, is a very good speed... with a very small OC you can have more that a 9650... 3.1 Ghz in OC. very stable.

the cost for a Q9550 is 280 €.... ok... it´s near X2 prices of Q6600... but the others Qxxx only give bettter Watts...

bye.

The latter is what strikes me first.

There's nothing really wrong with the Q6600. I have the Q6700 and not only it is a good price/performance tradeoff, it was easy to overclock.

But if I were buying something new now I'd probably at least go for the Q9450, which has more L2 cache, a higher bus speed, and is on a 45nm scale (lower power). I think their cost is reasonable now.

The Core i7 seems like the best choice today ... it overclocks quite well and although the price of the motherboard and DDR 3 memory is high, if properly overclocked it will get close to the performance of an 8 core 2.8Ghz system. The Q6600 is quite old now but still an amazing performer. I think I posted about building a cheap Quadcore Q6600 system more than a year ago ... and it still is going strong. You can build a Q6600 system at maybe a 60% of the cost of a Core i7 system with maybe a 20% loss in performance.

My budget is quite limited at the moment and I couldn't wait any longer so I think I will just have to make myself contented with either of the two processor for the time being and just replace it later this year when the prices of the Core i7 would go down more.

By the way, the curent poll is tied. Anyone care to break the tie?
