Even though he's gone, I'd still vote for him as moderator.

Re: Robin Smith 1952-2009
He truly liked chess, problems and combinations especially, more than computer chess per se I would dare to say. I could see it the way he posted analysis to the many difficult "Test positions" here. I think he thought of computer chess as a way to improve human knowledge about chess, something that fascinated him.
He was always very patient and detailed in his explanations regarding problems solution. He liked to teach and he was, without doubts, one of the strongest player posting regularly on this board (if not the strongest).
If I had to meet someone on here, I would I've picked him for sure.
My condolences to his family and relatives,
Marc MP

It's a shock for me. Very sad news.

After his son's birth they've asked him:
"Is it a boy or girl?"
YES! He replied.....

Dear Sean,
That is a good idea. Hopefully, Steve B. and others will put an entry into Wikipedia in order to bring attention to Robin Smith and his work in chess and computer chess.

My condolences too. It is sad when people die, but especially if they die too young. Robin did not post anything that seemed to indicate he was ill, but it is possible that he did not want to do that. As Stephen wrote that his close relatives were surprised by what happened I suspect it was something sudden.
Robin was surely one of the strongest chessplayers on this board and he has done a lot for computerchess, not just by the things he wrote here, the books he authored but also by using his electrical engineering skills to repair ageing chesscomputers.
Up there in space, astronauts from Atlantis are struggling with the old Hubble and have to find down to earth solutions, using all their skills and all their training and sometimes a little brute force to repair something that, despite its age, is worth keeping alive. I am sure Robin would have appreciated that kind of effort. Maybe he is watching.

I did a search on Robin's posts and was reminded of what an accurate analyzer of positions he was. Also reveals a respectful, well worded man with a true passion for chess.
