I wonder how Komodo would handle the Black pieces after RxN, given some time to search. Looks like Komodo was expecting 95...Qf5, if I'm correctly reading the comments in the original pgn.
The time control was a long one, not a short one. 90 minutes per side per game plus 20 seconds increment. Average game is 3.5 hours or so. So time being a problem is not an excuse. I think there was something to the sacrifice. It's just a matter of time before the pawns go forward in concert with the bishop and queen.

Sincerely,

Tim.
I guess I consider that short time control. My impression is that the positional and defensive play of engines really starts to shine when they can reach depth 35 or 40.

In any case, Stockfish (with some real time for chess) seems pretty happy with what it thinks is a better defensive plan than what Houdini chose:

Code: Select all

info depth 53 seldepth 92 multipv 1 score cp -3 nodes 287655783712 nps 28519780 hashfull 999 tbhits 0 time 10086185 pv f7f5 a4d1 d8g8 g1f1 g7g5 h5g6 h8g7 h2b2 g7g6 b2d2 f5h5 f1g1 h5h3 d2g2 h3g2 g1g2 g8d8 d1g4 c7e7 g2h2 h6h5 g4d1 e7c7 d1b3 c7d7 b3c2 g6f5 c2d1 d7h7 d1b3 h7d7 h2h3 f5f6 h3g2 f6f5 b3d1 d7h7 d1c2 h7d7 g2f2 d7e7 c2b3 e7d7 b3d1 d7h7 f2g2 f5g6 d1c2 h7d7 g2h3 g6f6 c2b3 f6g6 b3a2 g6f5 h3h4 f5f6
Would be interesting to see if Black can hold this.

A bit deeper. Stockfish sees equality:

Code: Select all
