Eduard,
maybe you're on to something (this wicked fishtest thingy with its (obscure?!) timings might lead in a cul-de-sac) with this very criticised commit, but as for now it seems that you likely miss the proper manners* and nomenklatura ("formulas"?) in your efforts to communicate with the developers who're writing code whithin the stockfish project - in their free/spare time mind you! Moot point, because you've stated "Bye" - for now, I just saw ramblings and tries of manipulation of others here from you. And Rumpelstiltskin in the flesh of course.
But: Compiling/releasing some binaries out of existing code of someone, doesn't make you a developer (typing "make" in a console ≠ "mine" as in code/contribution) as you've likely experienced and know already, so:
-if you don't like the code/current way of development of a certain open-source-project, fork it and just take the goodies (hard to spot, eh?)/healthy commits! It's all there for the taking, thanks to the GPL. Take the fame. Perfect!
-if you can't maintain the (otherwise growing) delta properly then this whole episode would prove to be above your head/skills, which isn't itself bad, if one would take this not only as a learning process (one would be back on square one ore two)
Hint: Read and learn the Basics and then get involved through the proper channels.
*dropping a line like: "your latest code is shit, read ELSEWHEREWHY!!!!111" without any regards etc. in a dev-channel...

Re: Stockfish 070324 a Disaster
Yes, I will do that too. I develop my own clones. I'm not the only one who does that. There are many clones that are better than SF developer. Great! For everyone else: celebrate Stockfish dev, you are free to do so.
I was just frustrated with the new developments with the small networks and at some point you have to be allowed to say that. But I realize that no one here is interested in what I have to say. But I don't mind that. But maybe it's different. Many people want me to email them my private engines, but that's too much for me. That's why I now ask that no one write me emails in the near future. I'm not looking for recognition.
I haven't insulted anyone personally, but I was insulted by a developer on Discord a few months ago. But I'm always the one to blame, even though I'm often insulted myself. That's not OK, but well, I can live with it.
I now ask you to stop comparing me to programmers and asking, what can you do? I'm always a practical person, and theoretical crap without practical evidence is not my thing. I have now published an engine here. Take it and test it and post your comparisons with SF dev. Anyone who doesn't do this should keep quiet from now on. I have no interest in pure theoretical discussions.

Better than "SF developer". Maybe for a blink of a second, minute... is some aspects, in hindsight under certain conditions .... But you all DEPEND of the continuing work of others. Upstream. That's why you're whining. No progress in the stockfish-dev? No progress whatsoever your (ore anyone else's) cloned clony things! Nothing. None. Nothing you had or could contribute. Copy and paste. Release. Nothing else. Nothing.
You stop me to ask? And: What (?) can I do? Nothing! I won't do nothing.

Unparalleled arrogant and self-important shit. You know almost nothing! b00N? Satisfied fool?
Tiresome. I'm out. "Bye"!

No, it has always been like that, at least since Fishtest allowed it to rapidly gain Elo. It has always worked tremendously well. You are only posting about Stockfish BECAUSE this has been the reality of Stockfish since 10+ years.

Eduard wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 4:32 pm I don't want to be seen as just a chatterbox. I've done a lot of testing in the last few months, not just with analyses. I play on PlayChess and Lichess with my own engines. Some of my friends play with my compiles and even use them for correspondence chess at the highest level! However, I don't enjoy it anymore. Every time I see a new network of developers, I am happy. Unfortunately, in the last two months I almost ALWAYS had to change something so that I could use the new SF engine for myself. But I don't feel like it anymore! I am frustrated!
I did it like this once today so that people wouldn't say I just talk and don't do anything.
I just made a simple attempt to change some parameters so that some positions can be solved better, such as the following. I ONLY changed the following parameters in the code of SF 070324. Because I use the larger network, I implemented the network with dimension 3072.
Network Dimension 3072 "nn-3182bacdfd54.nnue"
evaluate.cpp:
bool smallNet = std::abs(simpleEval) > 1250;
bool psqtOnly = std::abs(simpleEval) > 4600;
In the test of the two positions that I criticized in Stockfish from 070324, the new engine Big-SF 110324 analyzed it like this:
[d]1B1r4/rp2npkp/2b1pbp1/1qp5/nPN1R3/1P1P1QP1/2P2PBP/5R1K w - - 0 1
Analysis by Big-SF 110324-avx2:

And what does it look like in the bullet? How much stronger is Stockfish 070324? He's not stronger, he's even weaker! However, not at Bullet 60s, but at level 120s + 1s and not on one core but on 4 cores and Ponder ON (that's how we play in online tournaments), the developers test with Ponder OFF.

Test it yourself! Compiles are with external networks.
I think that correspondence game at the highest level is dead.
If people use stockfish and their own brain then it is a draw.
I am even not sure if they need practically to use their own brain.
Can you show me a single game when you can beat stockfish in a correspondence game.
There are test positions when stockfish has weakness and may play a losing move even after an hour of search but I did not see a single game when latest stockfish with no opening book practically lost at fixed nodes per move assuming the number of nodes is at least 10^9 nodes per move.

Pohl test shows progress Stockfish 240307 finished: +3 Elo to Stockfish 16.1. No bullet, but 3min+1sec. AFAIK no clone has EVER been stronger than latest SF dev version!

But I don't see anything in the sources that points to a learning system at least nothing obvious so probably this one does not learn. Nothing in the options either that I can see
Sun SE does not have learning built in (no experience.cpp or experience.h). Sun 1.0 and 1.1 did, however.
If I recall correctly, I think Sun SE had a slower search compared to its predecessors.
Here a comparison of the branching factor of Sun SE and Big Leptir in modified position from Eduard. Probably Stockfish is somewhere in between? But it could be different. Partly this is from the big net in Big Leptir, but also from double extensions in PV nodes at least in Stockfish, at least that's what I suspect. Maybe bigger hash entries so 512 MB hash is filled more rapidly. But the question for me is this the way modern engines will develop? My take: I prefer Sun SE for longer analysis. Very different from Engine room games though, but correspondence chess?
I know, depth numbers say little, and Elo numbers say even less.. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. If it is about usefullness for people like Eduard.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Re: Stockfish 070324 a Disaster
Yes, Leptir Big-Ultra is very slow. Someone had the idea to implement eval hash, and did it (private). It seems that Leptir Big-Ultra really achieves more plies and calculates deeper. I have not made the engine with eval hash public. However, some correspondence chess players are now using this engine and are satisfied, the network with Dimension 3072 also seems to be arriving in correspondence chess.

Re: Stockfish 070324 a Disaster
Pohl is testing with Ponder OFF, which means nothing to me because I play on the servers with Ponder ON. Pohl is also testing with UHO openings, the SF developers are also training with UHO. I test with Ponder ON and use openings that appear in online ENG practice. And here my version is better (on 8 threads/engine) and it is also better for analysis.I just changed simple eval value, all other is 100% Stockfish dev 070324 code!
