You can buy many of them but if you want to make them work you need to register with an identity card and your head beside the identity card so the provider can check out if it is identical.
Ok, let's assume there are no anonymous SIM cards. Now, I, Alex, will go buy 10 registered standard SIM cards (by the way, they cost 3€ each here, and there are even some that are free). Then, I'll create 10 different accounts here with 10 fake names and the 10 phone numbers. TalkChess, how do you know if these are actually 10 new people? How do you solve the anonymity issue?
Alex
We rely on goodwill of members not to be maniacal idiots.
If we attract too many of those we may as well pack up the forum and go home.

If we believe in the good faith of users, what's the point of seeking a good authentication mechanism against anonymity?
(I am addressing who is proposing it, not you specifically)

We’re not going to have a perfect authentication method, and will have to rely on “good enough” subject to our resources (which are minimal). If you like to continue proposing methods to circumvent, please feel free to continue, perhaps in the kindergarten section?

...this still would not resolve any fake real names, cos only the phone number was verified as ID. But if there occurs any malicious behavior, phone number might help for any legal actions.

All you can verify is that the given phone number is a working one and nothing more as there are many (free) services providing "temporary sms"...
So, how do other internet platforms solve this issue? Anonymity, real name, ID? What is feasible for a small interest group like TalkChess?
- verification link per email (you verify a given email)
- SMS code (you verify a phone number)
- bank transfer (you verify a bank account + bank account holder)
- eID, present for German ID card, upcoming for Europe in future (you verify person's ID + name++)
- external OAuth/OpenID login (you rely on verification of an external platform)

Look, I'm not continuing to propose any prevention method per se, I am against authentication for Talckchess!
I simply objected to someone proposing the phone as a solution for anonymity, which doesn't work, by suggesting an alternative.

How about authentication for moderators, or can they be anon too?

I think most of this discussion is pretty pointless. Do the best you can with real names needed etc… But taking more steps to prove a moderator’s identity is a good idea.
