here: http://www.inwoba.de you find the tourney.
If Booot comes out with more than 2706 Elo it will push good old Zappa out of the Top 20. That is especially remarkable as Boot is written "just" in Pascal and for sure has a performance handicap compared to the other C/C++ engines there!
Have fun

It might succeed I think....IWB wrote:here: http://www.inwoba.de you find the tourney.

A remarkable chess engine that is a little bit underestimated....
I'll wait for your results Ingo and might give it a wild card for my private rating list......

That would place it as No. 17 - very impressive!

Actually, there's no reason why Pascal is slower than C. It depends how you use it, and what kind of code you write. But best/fast code in Pascal should be as fast as best/fast code in C. That's assuming Pascal compilers are as good as C compilers, which is perhaps a bad assumptions these days (Pascal is going out of fashion to say the least). The real reason to choose C over Pascal is that doing all the low level stuff that you need to do is much nicer/less verbose written in C (I hated manipulating pointer and doing bit fidling in Pascal, but it's possible). If there is a performance penalty it's surely small, and the translation of raw speed into elo is logarithmic, as we all know...IWB wrote: Boot is written "just" in Pascal and for sure has a performance handicap compared to the other C/C++ engines there!
So Pascal engines can still shine. It's just a penance to write code in such a verbose language.
Theory and practice sometimes clash. And when that happens, theory loses. Every single time.

Thats the point. To my best knowledge even in the 80th the good old Turbo C compiler was always faster than the Turbo Pascal compiler from Borland (talking about the result of the compilation of course)lucasart wrote:... That's assuming Pascal compilers are as good as C compilers,...
So, yes, it is not the language but the worse compilers.

Poor Zappa.... but actually it is amazing it has stayed there so long. It is very old now.IWB wrote:here: http://www.inwoba.de you find the tourney.

Did Martin run Zappa on 16 cores for nTCEC ?

Not officially, but I've tested it and it usually crashes with 16 cores. With 8 it works fine though.Modern Times wrote:Did Martin run Zappa on 16 cores for nTCEC ?

Pity. Was that the last release, Zappa Mexico II ?Martin Thoresen wrote:Not officially, but I've tested it and it usually crashes with 16 cores. With 8 it works fine though.Modern Times wrote:Did Martin run Zappa on 16 cores for nTCEC ?
The older freeware one used to crash on just 4 cores sometimes.

Re: Booot 5.2.0 running for the IPON
I would not object if you would put Zappa Mexico II into nTCEC Season 2, as a "representative of the old performers", like Naum. Just in case that you don't find enough new interesting engines. But Booot is certainly a candidate. The intermediate IPON result after 1134 games is at Deep Junior 13.3 level.
