They don't all play 2.c4Togga wrote:but it is good that not all engines play 2.c4 because it would be very boring when all engines play always the same moves.
Besides which, you can give them an opening book that expressly forbids it if you like.
Personally, I'm rather fond of 1. b4
Yes, I know... it's a terrible disease (and without any cure).

Please consider a suggestion then. I think the "best" reply to 1 b4 is 1...e5. So, those who want to avoid Black's "best" defense should first play 1 Nf3, and only then 2 b4.
I acknowledge that some 1 b4 advocates actually enjoy playing against 1...e5. But I think those people are unaware of the subsequent "best play" from Black.
All the best,
Steve

I imagine the sequence follows with this much at least:Stephen Ham wrote:Hi Dann,Dann Corbit wrote:Togga wrote:but it is good that not all engines play 2.c4 because it would be very boring when all engines play always the same moves.

I do realize that there is a small advantage for black in the Orangutan, but quite frankly, I don't care. For some reason that I cannot explain, it feels beautiful to me.
Can you let me in on the surprise if you have something sneaky in mind against it?

I once played 1.b4 in a tournament, with good record.

Examine Movei's record in the Orangutan in tournaments and rating lists.swami wrote:I'm fond of Catalan System/Colle System/English Opening.Dann Corbit wrote:Personally, I'm rather fond of 1. b4

It performs above Elo baseline.

You're correct that the above live favors Black. That's why I recommend that White avoid it by playing 1 Nf3 and then 2 b4. White gets his Orangutan while avoiding giving Black an opening advantage.

Hi Steve, good suggestion but with Nf3 c5, or Nf3 e6...there will not be any Orangutan opening anymore.

FWIW, that is the Santasiere variation, which deserves to be played more often.Stephen Ham wrote:Hi Dann,Dann Corbit wrote:I imagine the sequence follows with this much at least:Stephen Ham wrote:Hi Dann,Dann Corbit wrote:Togga wrote:but it is good that not all engines play 2.c4 because it would be very boring when all engines play always the same moves.

I am not so sure that 1. b4 e5 is advantage for black. Black may have a comfortable game but white is not that bad.

most engines do not play 2.c4 at short timecontrols.
i dont know much about 1.b4.
in CA base 1.b3 has better score than 1.b4.
