No, the position cannot be saved indeed. The idea was that the wNh8 should both deliver mate and prevent the black king to go to g6 if I understood that correctly. So if you put a white pawn on f5 or a black piece on g6 (no knight), the white knight is 'only' delivering mate. Hope I got the point.

I thought that was the "point", but only the creator knows for sure.
