No, the position cannot be saved indeed. The idea was that the wNh8 should both deliver mate and prevent the black king to go to g6 if I understood that correctly. So if you put a white pawn on f5 or a black piece on g6 (no knight), the white knight is 'only' delivering mate. Hope I got the point. :)
I thought that was the "point", but only the creator knows for sure.

The position i posted came from an endgame study. The study is incorrect, i should have examined it more closely. Here is the full study -

The study is correct, since White should win after 8...Kg6.

David, your first impresion was correct. You saw mate in 2, since 8...Kg6 is only a technical variant. You feel beauty!
